Most Buddhist and Daoist temples are walled compounds, which may contain many buildings with Buddhas, libraries, gardens, pagodas, and living quarters ("first enlightenment, then the laundry").  Many temples were destroyed by Red Guards during the Cultural Revolution, but some have now been restored and are again home to Buddhist monks.
