Rafting Grand Canyon

First, a bit of introduction.  A raft trip through Grand Canyon, Arizona covers 225 river miles and requires a minimum of two weeks to do it right.  Yes, you can blast through on a 30 foot long motorized barge in 5 days, but that would be like seeing Paris from a tour bus without stopping at any restaurants or museums...why bother?

Curt's Sierra Club trip from May 1-14, 2004 used 18 foot rafts, which get you up close and personal with the rapids.  We had time for hiking in many side canyons, and Curt gave half a dozen evening talks on topics such as the history of the earth, preservation of Native American artifacts, and the history and politics of water usage in the Colorado River basin.

Curt's photos give you a small sampling of the scenery and a hint of the excitement of the rapids.  We hope that these photos will inspire you to get your priorities straight and make time for your own trip through the Big Ditch.  Just do it! Note: the written story on the Trip Reports page is from our September 2000 trip; these photos are from our May 2004 trip.  You can click on a thumbnail below to go directly to a particular photo, or enter here for the full slide show.
