| OK, enough of pretty rocks and cactus flowers and serene waters. Let's paddle the Mother of All Rapids—Lava Falls at mile 179, which is considered by many to be the biggest runnable rapid in North America. This sequence of 5 photos shows the paddle raft negotiating this huge drop of 37 feet. It only takes about 8 seconds, the same time you spend on a bull in a rodeo, and you're just as likely to finish the ride upside down. I took these photos from shore with a 200 mm lens as the first raft went past...then it was my turn. |
