| The “Book of Worms” is a famous fossil site in Parashant Wash at mile 198, where we camped on day 12. A house-sized block of Bright Angel Shale has fallen from above and broken open to reveal layer upon layer of perfectly preserved tubes and tracks made by burrowing marine worms that lived in the Cambrian mud over 500 million years ago. This close up shows a 3 x 5 inch patch of finger-sized fossil worm burrows. |
