Image Description
Here is another person worth photographing. I took
this picture of Ann reading by lantern light one night while we were camped
along the White Rim Road in Canyonlands National Park. I set
a box in front of the lantern to block it from view and just made a wild
guess as to the exposure, which was perhaps 1/8 of a second. I
did not have a tripod, so the image isn't very sharp. But I
like the overall composition of Ann being framed by the fallen, but still
living, cottonwood tree and the stark lighting.
The White Rim Road was originally constructed for uranium
prospecting in the days before Canyonlands became a national park. Today
it is one of the world's premier mountain biking roads. We
have done it twice—once in each direction. The 100 mile
ride is usually done in four days and requires vehicle support (4WD, high
clearance) since there is no water along the way. Only a limited
number of campsites are available, and reservations need to be made a
full year in advance. But the wait is well worthwhile. Riding
through the spectacular desert with red rock spires, views of the Colorado
and Green Rivers, and perhaps an afternoon thunderstorm followed by a
crimson sunset make this one of our favorite adventures.
