Image Description
Bandelier National Monument near Santa Fe, New Mexico contains the ruins of a large Ancestral Puebloan (Anasazi) village.
The settlement, which had buildings as high as four stories, was abandoned around 1500 AD when the inhabitants moved a few miles east to the present-day
Cochiti and San Ildefonso Pueblos. This photo shows the
ladder leading into a restored kiva (underground ceremonial room). See the slides of
pictographs and petroglyphs for examples of Anasazi rock art.
New Mexico is a photographer's paradise. The clear air, mountains, pueblo architecture,
colorful chili peppers, and enormous thunderclouds would bring out the artist in almost anyone.
