Image Description
Mount Stuart (9415 feet, 2870 m) is one of the great peaks
of the Cascade Range in Washington. Its complex south face
rises from beautiful meadows artistically sprinkled with granite boulders
and larch trees. Larches are coniferous, but their needles
turn brilliant gold and fall off in the autumn, like the leaves of a deciduous
tree.
The trees of the Cascade Range are predominately evergreens. However,
red slide alders and golden larches provide spectacular colors just before
the winter snows arrive. I have hiked through the Mt. Stuart
area many times on climbing trips (read “Outer Space” on the
trip reports page), but I am overdue to spend a few autumn days there
just for photography.
