There isn't much good that can be said about Texas in general
and the Panhandle in particular, but when it is good it's really good. Palo
Duro Canyon State Park lies 12 miles to the east of my hometown of Canyon. It
is there that I imprinted on red rocks and did my first camping trips
as a Boy Scout. The Lighthouse is the signature formation in
this spectacular canyon, which is well worth a detour if you are ever
in the Panhandle.
I took this photo on a sunny but cold winter day (the next
day it snowed six inches). The composition was unintentional
because I couldn't get the shot I really wanted, but as it turned out
the junipers framed the Lighthouse well and the clouds gave texture to
the background. Twenty years later, this shot remains one of
my favorties.
