Image Description

Here's another magnificant animal that I could photograph without a telephoto lens.  During the winter, manatees come in from the ocean and hang out in the warmer waters of the freshwater springs for which Florida is famous.  I took an extra day at the end of a business trip to Tampa to go snorkeling with these gentle giants, and it was an unforgettable experience.  Don't ever pass up such an opportunity.

You can read more about manatees on the trip reports page.  These animals are seriously endangered by a combination of habitat destruction, speed boats, and water pollution.  Not suprisingly, both Dubya and his little brother Jeb have done everything possible to to roll back what little protection these animals have, all in the name of “progress” (aka increased profits for real estate developers).
