Image Description

I took this photo of Ann on a sea kayaking trip to New Zealand in 1994.   We went to New Zealand planning to split our time between hiking and being tourists.   But once there, we discovered that you can rent top quality sea kayaks in almost every town.  One of our kayaking adventures was four days along the Abel Tasman coast at the north end of the South Island.  This area is a fantastic mixture of tropical vegetation, strange bird calls, and spectacular scenery.  The kayaking is moderate, and you can camp on secluded beaches separated from each other by rocky headlands.

New Zealand turned out to be the most civilized country we've ever visited.   It is green, both in vegetation and politics, prosperous, and rationally governed.  I can't say enough good about the place, and I could easily imagine myself living there permanently if I didn't love deserts so much.  It is definitely a must-visit place for anyone interested in hiking, climbing, kayaking, biking, caving, or other adventure sports.  If your idea of a vacation is smoking cigarettes in a casino, you'll be disappointed.
